After studying 100,000 reviews of 30,000 Austrian firms, the website kununu decided employees are happiest out west, giving Vorarlberg a 3.72 ‘happiness score’.

According to the site, the saddest employees were in Vienna, which with 3.45 received the lowest score.

Styria and Burgenland came joint second place, with employees in those states scoring 3.71 on the ‘happiness’ scale.

The researchers said that money alone does not make a happy worker as a good work atmosphere, good relationships between colleagues, and interesting work tasks, is more important for many employees.

“We see in the reviews on kununu that for productive work, a good work atmosphere and good relationships with supervisors are more important than high wages for many employees,” said the head of German speaking countries for kununu Dr. Ekkehard Veser.

Above all, happy employees treasure being given freedom to do their work and achieving targets and feeling confidence is more important that control from above. Self-determination and individualism are also seen as important tools for motivation and productivity across Austria.

“The demands from employees have changed in recent years. That means that the management models have to be changed accordingly,” said Veser. “The ability to motivate employees in the long-term will be a central factor in the future.”
