Torrential rain on Friday morning has led the weathermen to warn that the capital could face flooding.

The low pressure front Karin brought terrible weather to eastern Germany on Friday morning, with Berlin suffering under continuous, heavy rainfall.

As much as 40 litres of rain per square metre could fall on Berlin, leading to a risk of flooding, the Berliner Morgenpost reports. Lower estimates put the rainfall at between 15 and 30 litres per square metre.

On Friday afternoon, the situation is set to ease somewhat, with the clouds breaking apart and the sun making an appearance.

But the weathermen from DWD have issued a severe weather warning for the capital, predicting storms and sudden rain showers throughout Friday and Saturday.

Heavy rain fell nationwide on Thursday night, particularly in the south of the country.

But the type of destruction seen in recent weeks has so far been largely avoided.

In Ruhmannsfelden, Bavaria, five-centimetre-wide hail balls damaged the roof of a school, smashing the skylight windows.

Meanwhile streets in Niederwinkling, Bavaria, were flooded, as were several cellars.
