A drunk truck driver in Austria attempted to flee the scene of an alleged shoplifting incident over the weekend using only a tractor.

The 24-year-old truck driver fled on a tractor after raiding the restaurant of a motorway rest stop in the city of St. Pölten in Lower Austria, along with his 29-year-old partner who is also a truck driver.

The two men originally from Belarus had parked their trucks at the rest stop and had planned to steal from the restaurant there and then escape via the emergency exit.

As they attempted to carry out the theft of unknown items, restaurant employees managed to apprehend the 29-year-old.

The 24-year-old evaded them, however, and fled the scene by hopping on a nearby tractor and making his escape through adjoining fields.

Both men were said to be heavily intoxicated during the event.

The thief’s tractor journey came to a halt when a passer-by stopped him and the police eventually apprehended him.

The tractor driver had a blood alcohol level of 2.3 per mille when he was arrested. Police say the 29-year-old was equally intoxicated.

The police revoked the license of the driver who drove the tractor and both men are to be charged with shoplifting. The 24-year-old faces extra charges for unauthorised use of a vehicle.
