Residents of a small town in Austria could soon have their very own local superhero after someone claiming to be Batman wrote to the mayor to announce he is ready to take “action”.

The unusual letter signed by the comic character’s everyday identity Bruce Wayne arrived at the office of the mayor, Hannes Heide, in Bad Ischl late last week.

In it, ‘Batman’ criticises the “guardians of the city” for not taking enough action against drug use and addiction.

“This is about children, education, and the balance of this city, which is in danger as long as you don’t take action,” the letter reads.

Although praising the mayor of the small mountain town, the Bad Ischl ‘Batman’ blames “corrupt bureaucrats - especially among police officers and politicians” for some of the town’s troubles, as well as a lack of necessary technology.

Just like the cartoon, this 'superhero' explains that as a multimillionaire he does possess this technology and can no longer look on as “the scum destroy the city my parents built”.

He wanted to let the mayor know that he is “in action and carrying out vigilante justice”.

Any attempts to uncover his identity will apparently be fruitless, as he says he is always “one step ahead”. Nonetheless, the mayor reported the letter to police, although they say no offences were carried out.

Of all places in Austria, the sleepy spa town of Bad Ischl in the picturesque lake region of Salzkammergut might be the last that needs or expects to be rescued by a vigilante.

With a population of around 13,000, however, the superhero might find it an easy task compared to taking on the criminal underworld of Gotham City.

In fact, he is already having a positive effect on the town, after the beer tent of the local fire brigade offered a free drink to anyone wearing a batman mask or t-shirt on Friday night.

“Then maybe we can find the real ‘BATMAN’,” they wrote on Facebook.
