Switzerland experienced a return to winter on Monday as snow fell in some places, including the village of Gstaad, a stark contrast to the warm weather in many parts of Switzerland on the weekend.

On Saturday Meteo Suisse reported the hottest temperatures of the year so far, with the mercury reaching 26 degrees in Geneva and some parts of the Valais.

Yet temperatures plunged on Monday as humid and cold air swept across the country bringing heavy rainfall and snow.

Meteo Suisse issued a weather warning for many places including the pre-alps and eastern alps, where 50-80mm of precipitation was forecast for Sunday night and Monday.

Snow fell as low as 1,000 metres in the pre-alps on Monday.

In Gstaad in the canton of Bern, at 1,050m, the temperature dropped from around 20 degrees on Sunday to below zero on Monday morning.

Snow dusted the village, while skiweather.eu reported up to 45cms of fresh powder on the slopes.

The current weather will contribute to making this a wetter May than normal, particularly in northeastern Switzerland, said Meteo Suisse.

However from Tuesday the country will see a progressive return to milder weather, it said, with some parts of the country reaching 24 degrees by Saturday.
