Wrap up warm, folks. Large parts of central and northern Sweden are going to get snowed upon today, forecasters warn.

Rain pushing in from the east will turn to snow and sleet when it moves across the central Svealand region later in the day.

“There will be late snowfall in areas that are currently snow-free. It’s not unusual and fairly typical for April when it alternates between warm weather and snowfall , which then passes,” said meteorologist Sandra Andersson in a failed attempt to be reassuring.

The changeable conditions are set to continue into Friday, with showers expected in southern parts.

But listen to this: Forecasters reckon the weather will pick up in time for Saturday’s Walpurgis celebrations, when bonfires will be lit across the country and well-wishers will gather in Stockholm for the King’s 70th birthday.

“We have high pressure starting to move in from an easterly direction bringing double-digit temperatures to much of the country," said Andersson, who really redeemed herself quickly.

“Eastern regions primarily can expect some sun while in the west there’s a risk of rain,” she added, sparking renewed mixed feelings.

The arrival of May, surely, will bring springlike warmth? Nope, not really

“If we look at next week we have a low pressure belt passing, but it will at least be a little bit milder,” said Andersson, who in fairness is not to blame for any of this.
