Police officers in Venaria Reale, a town in Turin province, are in a spot of bother after the "curtains" of the changing room at their station turned out to be pictures of naked women.

By day, it looked as if the windows had been covered in blank paper - perhaps to protect the officers from the glare of sunshine, or to protect their modesty.

But when night fell in the town of 34,000, the light from the changing room illuminated the images, revealing a collection of nude women in compromising positions.

The pictures appeared to have been torn from an X-rated calendar or magazine, startling local residents who happened to be passing through Via Tessarin in the evening.

They wasted no time in photographing the sight and posting the evidence on the Facebook page 'Sei di Venaria se' (You're from Venaria if). One post, which has since been removed, read: "Our beloved local police are certainly original. Look how they've covered the windows of their headquarters," according to the Turin-based daily, La Stampa.

Police chief Luca Vivalda attempted to calm the controversy by pointing out that for over a year, the rooms in question had been the male changing room and not the main office, adding: "I didn't notice because I don’t get changed with the guys, but in my own office".

Once the photos had surfaced on social media, the windows were cleaned and the photos taken down, but not before the news of the blunder reached the mayor's office.

Vivalda was summoned to explain the situation in front of the local council, where he defended his force, saying "the police aren’t pigs, but professionals. It was someone’s stupid brainwave. But perhaps it was also provocative.”

Though Vivalda emphasized that he did not want to justify the "stupidity" of the culprit, he did explain that the changing rooms used to be part of a school and have many large windows.

The police force had apparently asked municipal authorities to black-out the windows over a year ago, but this has not yet been done - leading one exasperated officer to take matters into his own hands, presumably using whatever material was immediately available in a men's changing room.

Vivalda has said that those responsible for the stunt will face disciplinary sanctions.
