A plane from French airline Corsair jettisoned 70 tons of fuel over the Swiss Jura and Italian Alps on Sunday night due to technical problems.

The Boeing 747-400 was flying between Paris and the island of Mauritius when it ran into technical difficulties, Swiss air navigation service Skyguide told news agency ATS.

Forced to abort the flight, it dumped the kerosene over Switzerland and Italy in order to reduce the weight of the aircraft to prescribed levels for landing.

The fuel was jettisoned at an altitude of between 6,700 and 9,400 metres.

It subsequently returned to Paris Orly and landed without incident.

Fuel-dumping is an infrequent occurrence in Switzerland, with Skyguide reporting just two such incidents last year.
