Crime rate highest in Geneva: report
Switzerland was a safer place last year with fewer crimes committed overall, but the west of the country bucked the trend.
New figures from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) show there were 8.4 percent fewer crimes per 1,000 inhabitants last year.
The number of burglaries fell by 19 percent to a record low of 42,416, 20 Minuten reported.
The canton recording the most crime was Geneva where there were 123 criminal acts for every 1,000 inhabitants – an increase of 4.6 percent over last year.
At second place in the rankings was Basel-City, followed by the canton of Neuchatel, which saw its crime rate rise by 7.3 percent.
Another western canton, Vaud, was in fourth place although compared with the year before it recorded a 20 percent drop in crime.
The FSO crime map shows central and eastern Switzerland were particularly safe last year.
In the canton of Uri - officially the safest place in Switzerland - the number of criminal offences fell by a massive 38 percent compared with a six percent drop In Zurich.
Nidwalden and Appenzell-Innerrhodes also reported drops of more than 20 percent.
The cantons also show big differences when it comes to the incidence of different types of crime.
While Basel-City had the highest level of violence, Geneva had the most burglaries.
Within the cantons the big cities are more affected than rural areas.
The city of Fribourg had the most violent crime – 18 cases per 1,000 inhabitants while robberies were most common in Geneva and Lausanne.
