A 50-year-old in southern Germany woke up in hospital on Monday with a head made sore by more than just the car crash he caused.

Alarmed motorists on the Bundesstraße (interstate) outside Munich had already alerted police to a purple people carrier that was swaying erratically across the road shortly before eleven in the evening.

But law enforcement didn’t need to go on the hunt for the suspected drunk driver - he came directly to them, and at some speed.

In the village of Kirchseeon two young police officers had stopped the 25-year-old driver of a silver BMW and were checking his licence, when the people carrier careened out of the dark and struck the back of their vehicle.

The fact that the driver didn’t even put on the brakes meant he shunted the police car forward and crumpled its bonnet against the stationary BMW.

The 50-year-old man injured himself so seriously in the collision that he had to be taken to hospital by helicopter.

Both policemen and the BMW driver were also lightly injured.

Later checks showed that the driver not only didn’t have a licence, his car wasn’t insured, and he was heavily intoxicated with alcohol.
