An ambitious Austrian is raising funds to build a 1000-metre-high mountain in Berlin because he “misses the Austrian mountains” and wants to go skiing.

Skier and downhill biker Robert Halmer moved to Berlin three years ago and says it’s a great city to live in but is unfortunately “flat like a pancake”.

He has now kicked off the crowdfunding campaign 'Lowland Alps' with the aim of raising €1 billion to build a mountain in or near the city which would have ski slopes, fun parks, lakes and a skate park.

“A lot of people and I would love to go skiing or hiking in the mountains if we had more possibilities,” he says in the video on the Indiegogo crowdfunding website. “One day I had a huge idea - we build a mountain.”

“I’m sure it’s not easy, but not impossible.”

Writing on the page, Halmer admits that he would need to seek permission from local authorities to find a suitable place and it may take a while but “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

“It would be easy to go into a shop for mountains with a billion euro, buy one and let them deliver (sic). But it is not so easy,” he says.

With just €3 raised of the €1 billion he is hoping for, Halmer has a long way to go yet before his dream of skiing in Berlin can come true.

Although with the rewards for donating being items from Halmer's street wear business, cynics might think his ambitious plans might have more to do with marketing then mountaineering.
