Spain's national weather agency has confirmed it probably won't be a sunny Semana Santa.

Holy Week is one of the biggest festivals in Spain and this year, the festivities could be getting off to a decidedly soggy start.

With Spaniards planning their getaways in the run up to the long Easter weekend, a high chance of rain could put a dampener on the many events taking place across the country.

Spain’s national weather agency, Aemet, has released its forecast for Palm Sunday weekend and it looks like there is a high possibility of rain over much of the country.

On Saturday, March 19th, "the west and centre of the country will be cloudy and rainy, with the precipitation becoming more intense towards the northwest of the country, particularly Galicia," said a statement on Aemet’s website.

"Lighter rain could extend across the country, while skies over the Balearic islands will be mainly clear and free of cloud," the statement continued, providing some good news for those in Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza.

Light rain is also predicted in the north of the Canary Islands this weekend, while the south will be mostly clear.

The weather is set to get even worse on Palm Sunday, with heavy rain and storms forecast, especially in the north of the country, as well as light rain in the Balearic and Canary Islands.

Aemet said that it "could not rule out rain" heading into Holy Week, and would be able to provide a more accurate forecast in the coming days.

We will keep you posted.
