A driver in Austria had a lucky escape after he was almost impaled on a pole that smashed through his windscreen and stopped within inches of his head.

The driver had been on the A2 road in Wiener Neudorf driving into Vienna when he crashed for an unknown reason into a barrier that divided the two sides of the road.

As a picture taken after the crash on Monday shows, a pole - which is used to mark the boundary between the road and snow - then came through the windscreen and into the car.

According to the voluntary fire services, the pole stopped just centimetres in-front of the driver's face.

The lucky driver managed to escape with no injuries, although the car was badly damaged.
