1. Liljevalchs Spring Salon

Dating all the way back to 1921, the Liljevalchs Spring Salon is an annual staple in most Stockholmers' exhibition calendars and marks the opening of a new artistic year. The art gets chosen by a jury every year and includes a range of unknown rising creative stars. In 2016 it has temporarily been moved to central Stockholm while the Liljevalchs venue – Sweden's first public museum for contemporary art -- on the Djurgården island undergoes a renovation.

When: Open now until April 10th (Monday-Thursday, noon-8pm; Friday-Sunday, 11am-5pm)

Where: Malmtorgsgatan 8, Stockholm

Tickets: 20 kronor ($2.32)

2. Swedish Dads

Malmö-based photographer Johan Bävman is showing off his lauded photo project about what it's like to be a dad in one of the world's most gender-equal nations. It shows fathers at home with their kids, but also questions Sweden's self-perception of having the world's most equal balance between mums and dads. "I had the idea to start this photography project when I myself went on paternity leave," he told The Local in an interview last year.

When: Open now until April 24th (daily 10am - 5pm)

Where: Slottsholmen, Malmö

Tickets: 40 kronor (half price for students and free for under-19s)

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));

3. The Rise and Fall of Ingrid Bergman. And Rise

This event is dedicated to Sweden's Oscar winner and perhaps most iconic actress of all time: Ingrid Bergman. When she was not on the big screen, the Swede was an outspoken proponent of gender equality and multiculturalism and was highly critical of celebrity culture. The many aspects of her personality are captured in photographs by Robert Capa, Lennart Nilsson and Andy Warhol, among others, in this exhibition.

When: Open now until April 17th (Monday-Thursday, 10am-7pm; Friday, 10am-6pm; Saturday-Sunday, 11am-4pm)

Where: Sundsvalls Museum, Kulturmagasinet, Sundsvall

Tickets: Free

4. Imagine: Created Reality

Swedish photography artist and TED talker Erik Johansson has wowed the world with his mindblowing works of retouched images and is now displaying his stunning pictures at the capital's Museum of Photography (Fotografiska) with the 'Imagine: Created Reality' exhibition. "I want the normal to become abnormal," the digital whizz has described his realistically surreal art.

When: Open now until April 10th (Sunday-Wednesday, 9am-11pm; Thursday-Saturday, 9am-1am)

Where: Fotografiska, Stockholm

Tickets: 120 kronor (concessions: 90 kronor)

5. Irish artist Joe Slevin

Up-and-coming Stockholm-based Joe Slevin is opening his first public exhibition in Sweden this weekend. The Irish artist, who describes his style as "big and bold", told The Local that he enjoys experimenting with colourful portraits of people who have had a strong influence on him, including everyone from legends such as Al Pacino and Keith Richards to people he run into on the street.

When: Opens March 6th, 5-10pm; thereafter open daily until March 13th (noon-10pm; Friday noon-7pm)

Where: Detroit Studio, Roslagsgatan 21, Stockholm

Tickets: Free
