Residents near Badajoz got a "spectacular" light show of extraterrestrial nature at the weekend.

Observatories from the University of Huelva recorded a meteor falling towards Earth at 3:42am on Sunday morning. The cosmic object entered the Earth's atmosphere, speeding at 120,000 km/h, according to professor José María Madiedo who first posted a video of the event online.

The meteor started at an altitude of 100 km roughly above Badajoz and headed southwest towards the border with Portugal until it burned up at a height of 42 km above Earth.

Madiedo called the sight of the fireball "amazing" while others on social media called it "awesome" and "spectacular".

One Twitter user suggested that it could be a sign that the "apocalypse is going to come".

A similar meteor was recorded just the day before on Saturday over northern Africa in Morocco. According to Madiedo, citizens of southern and central Spain were able to see the stream of light as well. The University of Huelva's observatories in the regions of Toledo and Andalusia recorded images as well of Saturday's fireball.
