1. Stockholm Wine Fair

From February 18th-20th, Stockholm’s Wine Fair takes place in Nacka, just outside the city centre. The focus for this year’s inaugural event is on organic wine, and activities include tastings and master classes from various producers – plus, there will be gourmet food on offer. Tickets are only 250 kronor ($30) for entrance, with the tastings priced individually by producers.

2. Cheese Festival

The perfect accompaniment to the Wine Fair, this festival taking place from February 19th-21st offers a chance to learn all about Swedish cheese in the beautiful Nordic Museum. If you don’t speak Swedish, make sure to time your visit for the English language tours and lectures – but audio guides in a variety of languages are available, and the tasting sessions will overcome language barriers by using the language of cheese. Tickets are 130 kronor for adults and 40 kronor for under-18's.

3. Go To Sea Festival, Gothenburg

Sweden is known for its delicious seafood and from February 23rd, this five-day festival celebrates the very best. Local restaurants are introducing special menus with a fishy focus, while pop-up eateries will be appearing around the city too. There is also an activities programme suitable for non-Swedish speakers, where you can go along to events – many of them for free – and learn how the process works, from catching to filleting the fish. Prices vary, with many of the events free.

4. Science Dinner

On February 24th at 6pm, there’s a unique opportunity to attend a meal with top Swedish chef Henrik Norström and other food experts who will explain the science behind a successful dinner, including sustainable cooking, and how smell and taste affect the brain. The three-course dinner will give you plenty of time to learn about food and mingle with other enthusiasts. Tickets for the meal only are 650 kronor and you can add a drinks package for 355 kronor.

5. Uppsala Winter Festival

Swedes know a thing or two about coping with harsh winters, and food and drink play a big part. The 'Thousand Winters' festival, running until February 21st, has ice sculptures and skating, music and films on offer, with plenty of tasty refreshments to help warm you up. There'll be an ice bar, traditional semla buns and lots of hot food at the stalls.
