Austria grows by 115,000 people in one year

Austria’s population now numbers almost 8.7 million, according to figures released by Statistics Austria. The refugee crisis has seen the proportion of foreign nationals rise sharply - to 14.6 percent of the total population.

Compared to the beginning of 2015, the total population has increased by nearly 115,000 people - significantly higher growth than in 2014 which saw an increase of around 77,000.

Vienna recorded the highest population growth of all of Austria’s states - an increase of around 43,200 people since last year means the population now numbers 1.84 million.

1.27 million foreign citizens now live in Austria, an increase of 121,000 compared to the beginning of last year.

Almost half (48.7 percent) of non-Austrians come from EU countries. The number of non-EU nationals increased by around 75,000, to more than 650,000 people. This increase was most pronounced among Syrians (plus 21,800), Afghans (18,300) and Iraqis (10,000).

The number of Romanians (an increase of 9,600), Hungarians (8,700) and Germans (6,000) also increased significantly last year. Croats, Poles, Slovaks and Iranians made up the top ten fastest growing groups of foreign nationals in Austria.
