“The circumstances are such that crime cannot be ruled out. We have therefore launched a murder investigation,” Johanna von Wowern, police press spokesperson, told the TT newswire.

Swedish media reported that officers remained cautious about revealing any information about the pair, who were not previously known to police, after they were called to the scene at 7.10pm on Monday.

Forensic teams were working at the scene throughout the night, but nobody had been arrested by Tuesday morning. Police did not say whether or not they had any suspects.

“The investigative work continues and the forensic teams are doing their thing. We have to go through the statements from interrogations,” police spokesperson Stefan Forsberg told Aftonbladet.

Kolbäck is a small town of around 2,000 residents, about 20 kilometres south-west of Västerås.
