In an expected move, the Danish government said on Wednesday that it would extend its random checks at the German border for an additional 20 days. The measures will remain in place until February 3, at which point the situation will be reevaluated.

The government implemented the temporary controls on January 4, following Sweden’s decision to check the identification of all arrivals from Denmark.

“The government has followed the situation closely and on that background we are choosing to extend the border controls with Germany. It is not something that we do with pleasure because both the Swedish and Danish border controls hinder the free movement that we have worked toward in solidarity for many years,” Integration Minister Inger Støjberg said in a statement.

“But those of us in the government need to react to the extraordinary situation and we are doing what we estimate to be necessary in order to ensure public order and security in Denmark,” she continued.

Following the announcement, Støjberg said that the measures would remain in place “until it is no longer necessary”.

According to the Danish National Police, 213 people were denied entry to Denmark between January 4-12 and 29 people have been charged with human smuggling.
