Rome boosts anti-terror security ahead of sales
Extra security forces will be deployed to patrol shops and malls in Rome ahead of the winter sales, which usually get underway on the national holiday of January 6th.
Although officials said no specific terror threats have been made, the capital has been on high alert since the Paris attacks in November, with hundreds of soldiers patrolling the metro, train stations and key monuments.
Rome Police Commissioner Nicolò D'Angelo said officers would also patrol the city’s main shopping streets, Ansa reported.
Meanwhile, a judge in Genoa said on Monday that there are “well-founded suspicions” that two brothers arrested at the Ligurian port city’s airport on December 31st belonged to an international terror group.
The men allegedly attempted to travel to London using fake Belgian documents and had photos of weapons and war scenes on their mobile phones, Ansa reported.
A total 259 people were arrested on terror charges in Italy in 2015, with 67 of them being expelled from the country as a result.
