After the record high temperatures of December, the Swedish new year will usher in very cold weather and snow, especially in northern Sweden, although the south will also experience freezing conditions.

“The start of 2016 looks to be firmly frigid. The cold comes from the east. It’s a very high pressure front, so we'll have a really cold start to 2016. It will be a real winter week,” meteorologist Pia Hultgren told Swedish public broadcaster, SVT.

“Next week, you can expect minus 10 in Stockholm and around minus 20-25 in the north. Right down to Skåne can expect freezing temperatures,” Hultgren said.

“We are in colder weather mode from tomorrow (Saturday)," Lovisa Andersson, duty meteorologist at the Swedish weather agency, SMHI, told the Swedish news service, TT.

As the temperatures drop, SMHI has warned of sudden ice in Östergötland, Kronoberg and Jönköping.

However, according to Andersson, the cold weather will not be accompanied by much snow.

“During the second half of next week we will have some low pressure across the country and perhaps some light snow. But it won’t be huge amounts of snow.”

December was unusually warm, with Gävle, in northern Sweden setting new records for high December temperatures in Norrland twice in two weeks.
