Police have launched an investigation after a powerful blast at a popular Stockholm restaurant just a week before it is set to open its doors to revellers for its annual New Year's Eve celebrations.

A police bomb squad was called to examine the scene at Berns salonger in central Stockholm at 4.19am on Wednesday after an “explosive object” was thrown at the restaurant.

The normally busy social hub -- which also includes a night club and a hotel -- was closed to customers at the time, but staff were inside. However no one was believed to have been injured in the blast.

It is the second violent incident at a nightclub building in the capital in recent weeks. On December 8th police launched a probe after a man fired a series of shots at Sturecompagniet in the busy Stureplan square.

It was not known whether or not the two incidents were connected.

“We have to look at what happened here first. I don't think we should draw any conclusions of the kind at this stage,” police press spokesperson Carina Skagerlind told the TT newswire.

Berns is one of the most popular venues on Stockholm's nightlife circuit, featuring several different bar areas for a capacity of 1,200. It is famous for its big New Year shindig every December 31st.

Its CEO declined to comment when approached by The Local, but a statement published on the restaurant's website said that the damage to the building was limited and that it would remain open as normal.
