He quit his job as head of Volkswagen after the company was found to have cheated pollution tests on a mass scale. But German media report Martin Winterkorn is still picking up his multi-million euro salary.

Volkswagen CEO Winterkorn is still on the pay roll of the company, despite stepping down from his job in September, reports the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Two people with inside knowledge of the company told Reuters the ex-CEO is still receiving his old salary which runs to the end of 2016.

Volkswagen has agreed to pay Winterkorn the money and see his contract out, broadcaster ZDF is also reporting.

In 2014 Winterkorn took home a salary of €15.9 million making him the best renumerated boss on the DAX 30, the stock market list of Germany’s largest companies.

A speaker for VW told the Süddeutsche Zeitung they do not comment on details of contracts.

When he stood down in September, Winterkorn insisted he knew nothing of the pollution tests cheating scheme in which over 11 million diesel engine cars were fitted with a software which distorted the cars’ nitrogen oxide emissions.

Germany’s biggest car manufacturer is threatened with fines amounting to several billion euros across the globe and faces the most significant crisis in its history.
