Scandinavia's biggest airline is scrapping routes from west Sweden to a number of European cities next summer.

SAS will stop routes from Gothenburg to London, Paris and Brussels in summer 2016, a spokesperson for the airline told Danish travel news website check-in.dk.

The company said that services to the European business hubs would be scrapped between June 20th and August 31st, so that the company could focus on offering other services over the holiday period.

"We are constantly assessing where we can utilize our capacity better and make ongoing changes. So half a year in advance we can see that the best use of our planes and staff is on other routes," explained Anna Vibeke Nielsen, a spokesperson for the airline.

According to check-in.dk, travellers who have already booked tickets to travel next summer can either cancel their tickets or be re-routed via Copenhagen or Stockholm.

The move comes just two months after the company announced it was cutting nine other routes from Nordic cities including flights from Gothenburg to Dublin and Berlin.

However SAS, which is partially owned by the governments of Sweden, Denmark and Norway, has also recently introduced a number of new routes from Sweden, including to Los Angeles and Hong Kong. New services between Oslo and Copenhagen and Miami have also been launched.

The firm has spent the past few years struggling in the face of growing competition from low cost airlines, including Ryanair and Oslo-based Norwegian, Europe's third-largest budget carrier.

But in September it announced its pre-tax profits were 30 percent higher this summer than in 2014 and said the company had celebrated its best July for a decade.
