A Swedish couple have hit out after losing a long-running court battle over the smell of pizza from a neighbouring fast food outlet which had the pair attempting to claim one million kronor ($117,451) in damages.

The two unnamed pensioners said they had enjoyed a quiet life in their village in southern Sweden for the past three decades. Until 12 years ago a pizza restaurant moved in next door.

It was the start of a fiercely fought battle which saw the couple complain about the smell of the pizza and the increased traffic outside their home to several courts and authorities.

"You can't live like this. We can't stand it any more," the wife told regional newspaper Kvällsposten late on Thursday, after Sweden's land and environment court (Mark- och miljödomstolen) upheld previous rulings saying the inconvenience to the pair was not enough to force the restaurant's closure.

"We really don't (like the smell of pizza). It's pure shit in our opinion," added the woman.

A manager told Kvällsposten that the restaurant had proper permits and abided by all regulations, but declined to comment on either the conflict with the couple or its resolution.

But the woman insisted she and her husband had not given up their fight and would be pursuing their battle for damage payouts elsewhere.

"If we get one million kronor we'll buy the whole shebang and tear down the building. Then we'll plant potatoes on the land," she told the regional tabloid.

She added that they had visited the fast-food restaurant once and had then been offered to dine there free of charge. But she added it was unlikely to happen again.

"Nowadays we never eat pizza, it's a complete sham. It's sandwiches with toppings that you can easily make yourself. We would rather eat meatballs and other real food instead."

Perhaps she had not heard about this bizarre Swedish Christmas-themed pizza, which does in fact come with meatballs (as well as cold-smoked salmon, pickled herring, sausages, ham and much more).
