A cold front swept in over Germany over the weekend, decking countryside and cities in snow, but luckily only one serious road accident took place in the whole country.

Snow fell in thick flakes on Sunday afternoon across the Bundesrepublik, but according to police reports the only serious accident took place in Baden Württemberg in south-west Germany, where a 28-year-old driver lost control of her car on black ice and crashed into a tree.

In the accident the young woman’s grandmother was fatally wounded and her mother and sister sustained serious injuries.

In the Stuttgart region there was also a pile up involving seven cars - but only two people were lightly injured as a result.

The German Weather Service (DWD) is warning that the cold front is settling on for the coming days.

On higher ground 10 centimetres of snow are expected to fall on Monday, while the weathermen also warn of the potential for snow drifts and stormy winds.
