A family of bears has been captured on film trying – and failing – to climb a tree in the Spanish Pyrenees.

The three adorable bear cubs were filmed in the Alt Pirineu National Park in Catalonia, northeastern Spain.

Before settling down to a cosy winter hibernation with their mother, the cheeky cubs seized the opportunity for some playtime.

The video above shows one bear scratching his back on the tree bark, while the others try to climb the tree trunk.

The rare footage of the cubs was published on Monday by Catalonia’s regional government, whose bear tracking team took the videos of the family in mid-September.

It is extremely rare to spot bear triplets, least of all capture them at play.

The unique family of bears was first filmed in May when the cubs were just three or four months old, reported Catalonia-based daily, La Vanguardia.

Experts following the bears used the footage to check that the bears had grown their winter coats and were well-fed.

They are now trying to identify the mother and father of the triplets using biological samples collected in the area.

The brown bear is the largest land animal found in Spain and is listed as endangered, with only an estimated 200 currently living in the wild.
