A heartbroken Swedish student has received thousands of offers after his social media appeal to find a date for a concert went viral – just a week after his girlfriend broke up with him.

Andreas Carlson from Halmstad in southern Sweden was one of the lucky fans who managed to snap up two tickets to an upcoming gig by hyped Swedish artist Håkan Hellström, when they went on sale over the weekend.

But there was only one problem. His girlfriend had broken up with him the week before and the 24-year-old student had no one to take to the concert. Instead, he posted an appeal on Facebook for a date on the night, hoping that at least one person would write back.

He got around a thousand replies.

"I haven't had the time to go through all the messages yet, the last days have been pretty hectic. (…) Some of them are really interested in going at the concert with me, others just want to tell me that my idea was awesome," Carlson told The Local.

His Facebook post, offering to sell his second ticket for half the price to a nice person who would consider having a glass of beer or wine before or after the gig, quickly went viral in Sweden and had received almost 14,000 likes by Tuesday.

"I got really shocked when it started spreading so fast, but now it just feels fun. I’m glad I can make people happy. I just thought a few people would see my post, I could never expect that it would go viral," he said.

Carlson says he he has not decided how to narrow it down to just one lucky winner.

"That’s my biggest problem right now, there are so many good candidates. Many of them seem to be wonderful people. I either have to draw lots, or I’ll just give the ticket to my mum or a friend. I haven’t decided anything yet," he said.

But he emphasized that his main intentions are not of a romantic nature.

"It doesn’t have to be a 'date', I just want to hang out with a nice guy or girl that I can have fun with."

Håkan Hellström, who sings in Swedish, is one of the Nordic country's most popular artists with his heart-wrenching lyrics about unrequited love.

He rose to fame in 2000 with the song 'Känn ingen sorg för mig Göteborg' ('Don't feel sorry for me Gothenburg') and has been sending pop fans into rapturous delight ever since.

The now sold-out concert will take place at the Ullevi arena in Gothenburg on June 4th and 5th next year. Missed out on tickets? Give Carlson a call.
