Hotels aren't just the preserve of tourists in Stockholm. They are also home to some of the hippest drinking spots loved by locals. Here's our pick of places to stay snuggly during autumn and winter.

1. Hotel Rival

Part-owned by Benny Andersson from Abba, this boutique hotel in Mariatorget in central Stockholm has a modern, brightly coloured art-deco interior and attracts a young, cultured crowd. Cocktails here aren't cheap but they are the stars of the show alongside guest DJs at weekends. There's a theatre on site too, so check for performance times if you want to avoid queuing for your margarita.

2. Hotel Skeppsholmen

A 300-year-old building with a sleek, contemporary interior and staff dressed by iconic fashion brand Acne, this hotel provides a cool oasis of calm away from the bustling city centre. Situated on the tiny Skeppsholmen island, you can catch a boat here from Slussen or stroll across the bridge from Stockholm's glitzy Östermalm district. There's a relaxed atmosphere here, perfect for a Sunday afternoon or a laid back drink after work. You'll find a range of good wines and spirits here.

3. Grand Hotel

The Rolls-Royce of chic hotels, Stockholm's most exclusive accommodation venue boasts The Cadier Bar, where you can feel like a prince or princess while looking out at the real Royal Palace in Sweden's old town (Gamla Stan). Here you'll be surrounded by antique furniture, chandeliers and quite possibly the odd celebrity (U2 and President Obama are among its recent visitors). The prices here may make your eyes water, but then this is a place that has been frequented by the city's rich and famous, as well as international visitors since 1874. Gentlemen visitors are expected to wear trousers after 6pm.

4. HTL Kungsgatan

Right in the heart of the city, just a short walk from Hötorget subway stop and Stockholm's cental station, this hotel opened in 2014 and boasts a simple, bright Scandinavian interior. It has a boutique feel but is owned by one of the Nordic regions largest hotel chains, Scandic. Head here for a glass of wine after a busy day out shopping, or come with your laptop and enjoy a coffee during the day.

5. Lydmar Hotel

Behind a grand pale stone façade, Lydmar Hotel oozes luxury, without too much stiffness or fuss. Throughout the building you'll find yourself surrounded by books and carefully sourced artwork, creating a warm, cosy and calm atmosphere. While the waterfront patio and upstairs bar have a reputation for live music during summer, drinks are served here year-round until 3am.
