UN in Geneva opens to public for 70th birthday
The United Nations Office at Geneva is throwing open the doors of its Palais des Nations headquarters to the public later this month to celebrate the UN’s 70th birthday.
The historic building will be open for touring on Saturday, October 24th from 10am to 5pm, while a number of related activities are planned to mark the creation after the Second World War of the global organization that today has 193 member states.
“As the main operational hub of the multilateral system, Geneva hosts many UN agencies that work on peace, rights and well-being,” UNOG Director General Michael Møller said in a statement.
“We invite the public to discover their activities and more on October 24th.”
At noon on that day, a sculpture by Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto called Rebirth, is to be inaugurated in the Arian Park, adjoining the UN grounds.
Based on the mathematical symbol for infinity, the sculpture is composed of 193 stones representing the UN’s current members, according to a news release issued this week by UNOG.
Other activities include free guided tours, photo and art exhibitions, concerts, dance performances, sports activities and games.
A children’s corner promises drawing contests, puppet shows, dance activities, games and quizzes.
A free shuttle will circulate between Geneva’s main train station, Gare Cornavin, and the UN every 20 minutes from 11am to 5pm, UNOG said
