Police in Malaga were able to track down a sex offender by tracing the serial number of the elevator after he posted a photograph of himself in it on Facebook.

After identifying him as a suspect in a spate of local sex attacks, police found him on Facebook and thanks to a ‘selfie’ taken in the lift of his apartment block, they were able to use the serial code to find his address.

The man, who has not been named by police, stalked underground carparks in apartment buildings in the Teatinas area of Malaga, sexually assaulting at least three women before stealing their credit cards and photographing their identity cards with the threat that he would return and kill them if they reported him.

Explaining the success of tracking down the alleged perpetrator through social media, Malaga’s National Police commissioner Pedro Garijo, explained: "Today is a world reliant on mobile phones so we can explore that alongside traditional forms of policing."

A search of the man’s apartment revealed credit cards and personal items stolen during the attacks.
