Vienna’s Ringstrasse will be closed on Tuesday evening, for the Vienna Night Run which is taking place for the 9th time. Organizers have said they expect around 20,000 runners, all taking part to raise money for charity.

Each runner has paid an entry fee of €6, which is donated to the Licht für die Welt charity, which helps blind and disabled people in impoverished countries. Night Run organisers expect to raise a record sum of around €120,000 this year.

"With this amount we will be able to fund around 4,000 operations in developing countries to combat cataracts. We will give people back their eyesight, and in some cases their lives," a Licht für die Welt spokeswoman said.

A few celebrities are running the 5km race this year, including actress Kristina Sprenger, ‘Miss Vienna’ Marleen Haubenwaller, and wheelchair racer gold medallist Thomas Geierspichler.

Runners will be gathering from 6pm on Heldenplatz, and will set off from Burgring at 7.45pm. The Ring and the Franz-Josefs-Kai roads will be closed between 7pm and 10pm. Delays are to be expected on all main roads in the city centre during this time.

From 6.30pm the tram lines 1, 2, 31, 71 and D will be on diversion and from 7pm the bus lines 1A, 2A, 3A and 74A will be diverted. The Wiener Linien transit company recommends using the underground trains instead this evening.
