ATMs at Germany's publicly-owned Sparkasse banks in south and west Germany are refusing to provide customers with cash and bank statements on Friday due to a problem at one of the group's computer centres.

Cash machines in Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Württemberg, Saarland, North Rhine-Westphalia and Bremen are all affected, a spokesman for the Sparkasse group's Financial IT told Spiegel Online.

Machines for printing bank statements are also affected.

But customers can pay for their purchases with EC (debit) cards or credit cards as normal as well as use online banking services, the spokesman said.

He added that technicians were working hard to get the system working again, although he could not say how long the fix would take.
