A school in the Spanish city of León has been chosen by fashion bible Vogue as having one of the most stylish uniforms in the world.

The maroon and navy checked school uniform of Colegio Leonés in the city of León, northwestern Spain, has been given the official stamp of approval by none other than American Vogue, which featured the school in an article on its website as one of the most distinctive school uniforms around the world.

"What we’ve always looked for in our uniform is for our pupils to be comfortable and happy in the clothes, which at the same time unite aspects that are both practical and fashionable," Manuel Belinchón, the school’s headmaster, told The Local.

The school had no idea it had featured on the iconic fashion magazine’s website - which described it as "more stylish than scholarly" until a mother of one of its pupils sent Belinchón a link to the story.

"We were really amazed because we had nothing to do with the decision," said Belinchón. "Vogue chose us because they liked our uniform, which makes it more special," he added.

The uniform consists of a maroon zipped jacket, a white polo shirt and maroon and blue checked skirts for girls, dark grey trousers for boys. The younger boys wear long, dark grey shorts while the girls' skirts are accompanied by long maroon socks.

The maroon colour is taken from the flag of León, Belinchón explained in an interview with the style section of Spanish daily El País.

"We wanted something a bit different from the usual boring school jumper, we were looking for something more attractive and dynamic so we chose the zipped jacket," he explained.

Delighted to be feted as one of the most stylish schools in the world, Colegio Leonés took to its Facebook page to tell the school community the news.

"Our school uniform has been selected by Vogue magazine as one of the most elegant on the planet!" the school wrote.

"We are so proud that our boys and girls are seen as so elegant and fashionable; it just shows that the biggest trend of the moment is to go to our school!"

Colegio Leonés was features alongside 13 other schools in the UK, Japan, Myanmar and Kenya, among others.

"School uniforms around the world hardly foretell of the ho-hum doldrums that have historically been associated with academia, but instead a vibrant student body on the brink of a bright future," the fashion magazine writes in the article accompanying the photographs.

And while Vogue loves the school uniform, students were amazed at the decision:

"And to think we hated it for 10 years!" wrote one former pupil on Facebook.
