Emily Watson receives Spanish film festival lifetime achievement award

San Sebastián International Film Festival is honouring the British actress on Friday with its most prestigious award.

British two-time Oscar nominee Emily Watson is to receive the Donostia award at this year’s San Sebastian Film Festival, joining an illustrious lineup of past winners including Meryl Streep, Robert de Niro and Julia Roberts.

The British actress, who shot to fame in Lars von Trier’s Breaking the Waves (1996) arrived in the Basque coastal city on Thursday, greeting fans along the red carpet.

She will receive the lifetime achievement award at a gala ceremony on Friday evening in the city's Kursaal auditorium.

Watson has twice been nominated for an Oscar, once for Breaking the Waves and again for playing English cellist Jacqueline du Pré in Hilary and Jackie.

"Emily Watson’s sparkling career has seen her work with some of the most important contemporary filmmakers: Robert Altman in Gosford Park (2001), Paul Thomas Anderson in Punch Drunk Love (2002), Tim Burton in The Corpse Bride (2005), Charlie Kaufman in Synecdoche, New York (2008), Alan Parker in Angela’s Ashes (1999) -for which she bagged a BAFTA nomination, Steven Spielberg in War Horse (2011) and Joe Wright in Anna Karenina (2011)."

Most recently Watson featured in the Oscar-winning The Theory of Everything, about the life of scientist Stephen Hawking, as well as blockbuster, Everest.

She was awarded the British honour of an OBE in 2015 for her services to drama.
