The suspect, who is in his 40s, is accused of abusing 46 children over a period of around 18 months, according to Ystad District Court documents seen by the Ystad Allehanda newspaper.

According to the paper, police found 1,461 indecent photos of children in the man's possession alongside 778 films.

Officers initially arrested the suspect last year, but he was released without charge.

However he is understood to have made "several confessions" according to local media.

The minutes of detention hearings seen by Ystad Allehanda suggest that he has admitted abusing children by encouraging them to make inappropriate poses in front of a webcam.

All of the suspected offences are alleged to have taken place in the man's home town and Ystad District Court has said that the case will be its biggest to date handling child pornography.

The man's trial is expected to start soon and is set to last several months, according to Swedish media.

Ystad, in Skåne in southern Sweden, is home to more than 18,350 people. The town dates back to the 11th century and is a hotspot for Swedish tourists.

It has gained international notoriety after being featured in Henning Mankell's stories about Kurt Wallander, a fictional detective whose investigations have also been made into a television series.
