This will be the pontiff’s second meeting with Russia’s leader in less than four months.

The pair last met at the Vatican in mid-June, during which Francis urged Putin to make a “sincere effort” towards restoring peace over the Ukraine conflict.

The pope kicks off his visit to the US on September 22nd in Washington, where he will meet with President Barack Obama and become the first pontiff to address a joint session of Congress.

He will then travel to New York to address the UN General Assembly on September 25th, before meeting privately with Putin, whose country assumed the rotating presidency of the US Security Council on September 1st.

He will then attend a multi-religious service at the site of the World Trade Towers, which were attacked on September 11th 2001.

The 78-year-old Argentine will wrap up the day with a mass at Madison Square Garden and a papal motorcade through Central Park.

When 10,000 free tickets for his address in Philadelphia on September 26th were made available on Tuesday, they were snapped up within two minutes, the archdiocese said, adding that "the website experienced 394,000 unique page views during that time."
