Italian police managed to foil an audacious attempt by three people to make off with 29kg worth of Nutella from a supermarket in the Ligurian town of Sarzana.

Città di Sarzana reported that the trio entered the supermarket on Saturday morning with rucksacks that were then allegedly stuffed with as many one kilogram jars of the chocolate spread as they could carry.

But the men, from Naples, were stopped by police officers as they attempted to flee the supermarket.

The haul, worth €170, was reportedly intended to be resold on the black market in Naples.

Sales of the chocolate spread, made by Ferrero, are said to thrive on the black market due to its high retail price when compared to rival brands.

The spread also made headlines this year when the French Ecology Minister Ségolène Royal outraged Italy by suggesting the French stop eating Nutella to save the environment.

Nutella theft is not just a problem for supermarkets either: one German man has developed a handy lock for the jar to stop greedy flatmates from dipping in.
