Italian energy company Eni said on Sunday it has found one of the world’s largest natural gas fields - so big it could supply Egypt with natural gas for decades.

The company said in a statement that the Zohr field, which covers an area of 100 square kilometres, could hold as much as 30 trillion cubic square feet of gas, or 5.5 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

It's the largest gas discovery ever made in Egypt and in the Mediterranean, and “will be able to ensure satisfying Egypt’s natural gas demand for decades”, the company added.

“This historic discovery will be able to transform the energy scenario of Egypt in which we have been welcomed for over 60 years,” Eni’s CEO Claudio Descalzi said.

Eni, which has been in Egypt since 1954 and is the biggest foreign energy group in Africa, said it will "immediately appraise the field with the aim of accelerating a fast-track development of the discovery".
