Legendary cake shop in ruins after huge fire
One of Sweden’s most famous cafes, Elsa Anderson’s konditori, has been destroyed in a fire. Part of the wooden building in Norberg in central Sweden was built in the 1600s.
Firefighters battled to save the popular tourist destination when the fire broke out in the early hours of Friday morning but were unable to prevent the cake and pastry shop from being gutted by the flames.
Surrounding buildings were also at risk from the blaze and firefighters worked through the night to stop the flames spreading to neighbouring houses and apartments.
“They’ve reduced the fire so much that they can move the barricades [put up by emergency services],” Ivan Aslund, a duty officer for Västmanland police told the TT news agency.
Authorities said that nobody was injured in the fire and explained that a full investigation would take place to find out the cause of the destruction, which remained a mystery on Friday morning.
Elsa Anderson’s konditori was founded in 1916 and moved to its current wooden building, part of which was built in the 1600s, four years later, according to the shop's website.
The cake and pastry cafe is featured in the prestigious White Guide for Sweden, which lists the country’s best food outlets and restaurants and describes the institution as “a cake shop that attracts long distance visits” from people on bus tours and road trips.
News of the fire spread quickly on social media, with reports about the blaze trending at breakfast time on Friday.

The fire in Norberg comes just a week after another fire threatened to destroy the historic wooden town of Eksjö in Jönköping county in southern Sweden. One woman died but firefighters managed to stop the blaze from spreading to more than 50 listed buildings in the surrounding area.
