Witnesses told police they saw several people on a motorcycle fire shots at a door to a housing block in the Bredäng suburb in southern parts of the Swedish capital just before 1pm on Tuesday.

One person was taken to hospital after being hit by one or more shots.

“I don't know how badly injured the person is but we have been able to talk to the person,” Eva Nilsson, a Stockholm police spokesperson, told the TT newswire.

Forensic teams were investigating the site on Tuesday afternoon while officers went door to door in the neighbourhood to collect witness statements.

“We're trying to get in contact with witnesses, and quite a few people have been outside today because the weather is nice,” Nilsson told the Aftonbladet tabloid.

Bredäng is a relatively calm suburb in southern Stockholm, but it has been an occasional trouble spot in recent years. It was one of the areas in the Swedish capital affected by a wave of riots and car torching two years ago.

“I heard the shots. It's terrible. You feel scared and unsafe, this is nothing we're used to,” an unnamed neighbour told Aftonbladet on Tuesday.

A torched motorcycle was found in the nearby Hägersten area later on Tuesday afternoon, which police suspect was used in the drive-by shooting.

There are currently no suspects. An investigation into aggravated assault has been launched.

While Malmö in southern Sweden has been rocked by a summer of violence with several shootings and explosions in recent months, Stockholm has remained comparatively calm.

But just two weeks ago a 19-year-old died in hospital after he was found with gunshot wounds between the Rinkeby and Bromsten areas north of Stockholm. The incident has not been linked to Tuesday's shooting.
