Spanish Santander chief Ana Botín will sit on David Cameron’s new economic advisory council, the only representative from a foreign company to do so, the British government has announced.

British MPs will test out their policies on the council, whose members also include BP chief executive Bob Dudley and the CEO of supermarket chain Asda, Andy Clarke.

Are these Spain's ten most powerful women?

Ana Botín was appointed chairwoman of Spanish bank Santander in September 2014 on the death of her father, former chairman Emilio Botín. Before that she was CEO of Santander UK.

Botín, who regularly makes the lists of the most powerful women in the world, is the only non-British citizen in the Business Advisory Group, which is made up of 19 business chiefs, according to Spanish daily El País.

The group will meet every three months with British Prime Minister, David Cameron, as well as several government ministers to discuss policies, including measures to improve housing, productivity and European reform.

The advisory council represents “a small group of business leaders in sectors of strategic importance to the UK regularly providing high-level advice to the prime minister,” the British government said.
