The summer heat seems to have got cows all fired up in the west German town of Aachen this week - with many apparently heading out in search of pastures new.

When the constant highs and lows of the German summer weather get you down, what's the first thing that you feel like doing?

Whacking on a chick flick and opening the ice cream, getting drunk in a beer garden with friends - or taking a stroll down a busy German motorway?

Because that's what cows in the town of Aachen on the Belgian border opted for this week.

On Wednesday police in Aachen were called to deal with some very strange complaints from motorists.

In the morning, a female driver called police to report a group of three cows wandering down the appropriately named Kalfstraße.

The cows were heading towards the busy main road, she told officers - but they'd "stopped by some grass to take a snack break."

The driver kept the animals at bay until help arrived. But before police got to the scene, a farmer appeared.

Having missed some of his herd, he'd come out in search of the wayward cows - and quickly ushered them back towards home.

Drivers on the busy A44 motorway also got something of a surprise when they saw a young calf standing on a bridge over the road.

The calf simply stood gazing at the motorway traffic, until its owner - notified by police – caught up with it.

Late in the afternoon, a calf was also found wandering around the village of Breinig.

Aachener Police told The Local that this sort of thing has never happened before.

"It's very peculiar," an officer said.

And is the summer heat really to blame for giving these cows the spirit of adventure?

Police couldn't say for sure, simply stating: "you'd have to ask the cows."
