Prince Nicolas enjoys first Swedish summer
Princess Madeleine and her husband Chris O’Neill are planning to relocate to the UK in the autumn, but are first spending the summer on the island of Öland, with their new baby prince.
Prince Nicolas is understood to be enjoying his first Swedish summer on the Baltic island of Öland, where the Swedish royal family’s Solliden Palace is situated. He is believed to be staying there with his mother and older sister, with other relatives scheduled to spend time there in the coming weeks, as is traditional for the royal family.
Öland is one of the most popular locations in Sweden for summer vacations. Joined to the Swedish mainland from the city of Kalmar in the south of the country by a 6km bridge, it boasts long sandy beaches and is one of the sunniest spots in the country.
Solliden Palace was built on the island by Sweden's Queen Victoria, the great-grandmother of King Carl XVI Gustaf and was completed in 1906. Parts of the large white Italian-style building are open to the public and the palace is surrounded by a huge park, which includes an Italian garden, sculptures from Greek mythology and a pavilion.

According to Swedish tabloid Expressen, Princess Madeleine and her financier husband Chris O’Neill are using their time on Öland to plan the baby's christening. The paper suggests that the pair has ruled out holding the service in the UK, where they are planning to move to in the autumn. But the Royal Court’s Press Office has so far not confirmed the newspaper’s suggestions.

Sweden's Princess Madeleine gave birth to Prince Nicolas last month, just two days after her brother Prince Carl Philip married Sofia Hellqvist in a busy week for the royal family. Expressen also claims that Prince Carl Philip is likely to be the baby boy’s godfather.
The new prince measured 49 centimetres and weighed 3080 grams when he was born. His full name - Nicolas Paul Gustaf - was revealed by Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf two days later.
His parents' decision to leave Sweden was revealed in May, just months after the couple returned to Scandinavia after living in New York.
“The whole family intends to move to England at some point in autumn. (…) The plan has always been that the family eventually would move on. Chris' business is mainly in England,” press spokeswoman Margareta Thorgren told Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet, which broke the story.
O'Neill's mother Eve O'Neill lives in central London, while his sister Tatyana is based on an eighteenth century estate just outside the city. The businessman was born in the UK but has spent much of his life in the US.
