Rain, chilly weather and even storms are predicted to taint Midsummer celebrations in Sweden on Friday.

It wouldn't be a Swedish Midsummer without a bit of rain.

Swedish weather agency SMHI noted that Midsummer is as unpredictable as it gets, with temperatures in the past ranging from snow and 0C to a scorching 35C.

This year, it appears the thermometer will rest somewhere in the middle.

"In the northern stretches of the country we're expecting light or scattered clouds and showers," Sofia Söderberg from the agency told Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter.

"Further south, in Götaland and Svealand, it will be overcast with rain and showers."

Those who live even further south can expect stronger rains and even a thunderstorm or two, the agency added.

The best weather will in central Norrland, where the mercury is tipped to reach up to 18C.

Across most of the country, the weather is forecast to improve towards the evening.

Plus revellers will get the chance to enjoy the sun setting between 9.30pm and 10.30pm in southern and central Sweden and not at all in the far north of the country.

Stockholmers can expect a high of 13C and rain, Gothenburgers can expect 15C and clouds, and people in Malmö are predicted to get very wet, with temperatures reaching a maximum of 15C.
