Two women have been stabbed in the busy Medborgarplatsen shopping and dining area on the island of Södermalm in Stockholm. Police have arrested two suspects on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police were called to the scene shortly before 5pm on Friday after witnesses reported two people being attacked outside a restaurant close to Medborgarplatsen underground station.

They later confimed to Swedish media that the victims were both women and said that two suspects had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

One man, 50, who wanted to be known only as Marino, told The Local that he had seen much of the drama.

"I saw the people that were stabbed, it was two women. There wasn't so much chaos, it seemed to be controlled. One was laying on the ground outside a restaurant and was getting medical help from ambulance staff," he said.

"It seemed like she had a wound in the right side of her stomach," he added.

Marino told The Local he had also seen three people "moving quickly" up the flight of stairs between the square and a nearby mosque immediately after the attack.

Police quickly sealed off part the area around the square as well as the mosque.

Officers were continuing to question people two hours after the attack, both outside the mosque and next to a sushi restaurant on the square, as media gathered to take photos of the crime scene.

But most bars and restaurants around Medborgarplatsen remained open and were packed with drinkers enjoying a sunny Stockholm evening.

"It's kind of strange that all these people are just sipping on their beers right after an attempted killing," a witness named Jessica told The Local.

"I was a bit shocked to hear about something like this so close to the city centre so I am cycling home right now to be away from the area," she added.

The two stabbing victims were understood to be in hospital on Friday evening.
