The holiday airline will take a new "hardline" against any disruptive or inappropriate behavior from passengers on its flights following a rise in drunken incidents on board.

The airline announced its new strict policy just days after the airline was forced to divert an Alicante-bound flight to offload a "drunk and offensive" passenger.

The flight from Leeds Bradford was forced to make an emergency landing in Toulouse last Friday to offload Grant Marshall, a passenger who the airline said was travelling in a party of 1.

"He was drunk, had smuggled on alcohol and was getting lairy," Nick Horbowyj a spokesman from the airline told The Local.

"Due to his unacceptable behaviour onboard, the pilot diverted the flight to Toulouse where the disruptive passenger was handed over to the police authorities and the remaining travelers continued onto Alicante.

"As well as Grant Marshall delaying holidaymakers, he could now be facing prosecution for his behaviour and could be found liable for the costs of the divert, which will run into thousands of pounds," the spokesman said.

"Such behavior has become all too common and the management has now said 'enough is enough'," said the spokesman. "If people are going to fly on our planes then they have to be nice and show some respect."

The airline, which operates flights to 55 destinations across Europe, will introduce its zero tolerance policy as of today.

Racist behavior, threatening passengers and staff and excessive consumption of alcohol will all be considered “inappropriate behavior” and face serious consequences.

The airline said such behavior could result in refusal to board, police prosecution, a flight diversion or even a flight ban for life.

"Jet2.com is a holiday airline.  We will not allow our customers’ holidays to be upset by an individuals’ obnoxious behavior," explained Phil Ward the managing director of the airline.

"Passenger welfare is and always will be our number one priority which is why we have brought in these measures to take action against anyone who causes offence and disruption to our passengers and crew. We will not hesitate to prosecute individuals where necessary."

Earlier this year low-cost airline Ryanair announced a ban on duty free booze between Glasgow Prestwick and Ibiza, a notorious party route, after repeatedly rowdy behaviour sparked fears over passenger safety.
