A marriage proposal in Graz went horribly wrong on Thursday evening after the couple started rowing and police were called to break up what escalated into a violent assault.

A 44-year-old man had planned to propose to his girlfriend and finally popped the question at 11pm, according to police.

The couple had been drinking heavily and were already known in the neighbourhood for their noisy rows.

What should have been a romantic moment quickly degenerated into an angry dispute about money, with the 44-year-old woman rejecting the proposal and telling her boyfriend he was “anti-social”.

The pair exchanged blows, with the man hitting his partner in the face repeatedly and slightly injuring her.

A neighbour called the police, who broke the fight up and made the man leave the apartment. He has since been given a restraining order.
