Sweden's royal family has been celebrating the King's birthday at the Royal Palace in Stockholm, watched by a huge crowd of onlookers.

King Carl XVI was joined by his wife Queen Silvia and several other members of the royal family at the palace in Stockholm's Gamla Stan (Old Town). The group waved to a crowd of locals and tourists before heading inside for lunch. This photo shows Princess Estelle, 3,  with her grandparents.

Princess Victoria joined her daughter Estelle and Princess Madeleine came with her baby Leonore in what is understood to be the first time the cousins have made a joint public appearance.

The two young royals looked very relaxed in front of the cameras. They are set to be joined by a new royal baby in the summer, with Princess Madeleine scheduled to give birth in June.

Princess Madeleine's financier husband Chris O'Neill was also present at the Royal Palace. In February the couple announced that they were planning to stay in Sweden for the foreseeable future, having previously been based in New York.

The Swedish monarch has been Head of State since 1973, when he succeeded his grandfather King Gustaf VI Adolf. His son Prince Carl Philip was not present at outside the palace on Thursday, but was represented by his fiance, former reality television host Sofia Hellqvist (shown on the left) whom he is set to wed later this year.
