A comparison of European railway systems released on Tuesday showed that Denmark scored highest for safety and has the third best system overall.

Denmark has Europe’s third best railway system, behind only Switzerland and Sweden, according to the Boston Consulting Group’s 2015 European Railway Performance Index (RPI).

The study compared railway systems by looking at their intensity of use, quality of service and safety. Denmark stood out in the latter category, tying Great Britain for the safest system in all of Europe.

The nation’s strong performance in the other two categories was enough to make Denmark one of just six ’tier one’ systems out of the 25 countries involved.

“[Denmark] makes its first appearance in the RPI with a rating of 6.4 overall. It has an excellent rating for safety and good ratings for intensity of use and quality of service,” the report states.

In Denmark, the vast majority of the nation’s railway system is operated by state-owned Banedanmark, which operates under the Ministry of Transport. More than 3,000 trains use the over 2,000 kilometres of state-run railways every day.

The Danish government in September 2013 approved a comprehensive package to improve the country’s rail network. The 29.1 billion kroner plan, Train Fund Denmark, calls for the implementation of a ‘one hour model’ to cut travel time between Denmark’s five largest cities down to an hour. It also includes the electrification of national railway connections to pave the way for trains that depend less on fossil fuels.
